Building A Wood Shed With Wood Shed Plans

You chop a bunch of wood and think you are prepared for the winter. Well, did you plan on some place to put that wood so that it would not get wet? If you didn’t, you may be in for a winter of fires that don’t light because you forgot to build a wood shed.  While you can get a wood shed from a store, it is often better to build your own woodshed. The reason for this is because when you build your own wood shed, you save money and you learn some great skills in the process. Building any wood shed of course begins with good wood shed plans.

When you are planning a wood shed, the three things that you need to remember are where you are going to put it, will it be easy to get to, and whether or not it will have enough ventilation in it.  The size of the wood shed is also important and it depends on how much wood you will be buying. Usually wood is bought in cords, and a cord fills about four feet by four feet by eight feet. So, if you are going to fit a cord of wood in your wood shed, the wood shed needs to be at least four feet wide, four feet high and eight feet long.


You can build your shed with a simple post and beam framework. You can even use wood that you collect from around your property.  When you are planning the walls, you should get about five posts that will go into the ground. This will give you four posts on the side and one post in the middle of the front. Your wood shed will only have three walls as the front wall will be wide open to allow for easier access. As a result, make sure that your wood shed opening faces away from where the wind usually comes from. If the shed is shielded a few feet away by trees, then you will be able to keep a lot of rain and snow out of the front.

In your wood shed plans, you do not need any studs. The posts will be all you need and then you simply nail some boards up for the walls. You also do not need a foundation because the wood is just going to rest on the ground.  When you are planning the roof, you will want it to slope backwards. For this reason, the two front corner posts, and the post in the middle of the opening will be slightly higher than the posts in the back. Then, attach boards along the sides and front, and put up wood on the top allowing for the slope. This will keep water from pooling on the top.

Lastly, in your planning, look to have some sort of moisture barrier over your entire wood shed. A simple sheet of plastic over the top can do this. It will keep the moisture off the roof and it will keep the wood dry. You can also put plastic sheeting over the front of the wood shed so that everything stays dry if there is a snowstorm.
