Types of Garden Sheds

You may be planning to build a garden shed for the first time or thinking about replacing an existing one. You would do well to remember that if you own a garden shed, it tends to depreciate over time. The speed and extent of depreciation may vary depending on the weather and the quality of the garden shed.

Seasons have their unique effects on a garden shed, and sometimes, you may actually need to replace one. For a first timer, it is even more crucial to know the different types of garden sheds and their advantages and disadvantages.

The two types of garden sheds are discussed below:

Metallic Sheds

Metallic sheds are usually made of aluminum, galvanized steel, or corrugated iron. A typical metal garden shed has multiple metallic sheets tied together by a single metal frame. The biggest advantage of a metal frame is its durability and strength. Metal garden sheds are resistant to fire, rotting and infestation by insects like termites.

However, you would do well to have a metal garden shed that is galvanized, otherwise your garden shed always runs the risk of developing rust. Metal garden sheds have another disadvantage if the metal sheets are too thin. Such sheets can be dented easily. Also, garden sheds with thin metal sheets can be easily targeted by vandals and thieves.

Therefore, it is always advisable that you build metal garden sheds with thicker metal sheets, and if you really have to build a garden shed with a thin sheet, ensure that you have adequate insurance protection.

Wooden Garden Sheds

The biggest advantage of wooden garden sheds is that they look natural. However, wooden garden sheds, depending on the type of wood, require constant maintenance. Wooden garden sheds do run the risk of rotting or getting split, especially under the influence of bad weather.

You need to buy specific varnishes and wood treatment solutions to keep your wooden garden shed in good shape. However, the encouraging thing is that wooden garden sheds tend to give you better long term benefits apart from the aesthetic element if you are able to regularly maintain them.

You will have a lot of readymade wooden garden shed protection, as almost all hardware stores sell preservatives and solutions for wood maintenance. These solutions enable you to protect your garden shed against UV rays, snow, sunlight or rain. Since these solutions work without impacting the natural looks of the garden shed, you do not need to worry about losing the natural look of your wooden garden shed.

It is up to you to take make the call on which type of garden shed to build. However, if you are really short on time and do not realistically see yourself having the leisure of building a wood shed, a metal garden shed may be a more practical option. That being said, you can also hire someone to build and look after your wooden shed.

Wood Garden Sheds Make Tool Storage Easy

Wood garden sheds have evolved extensively as far as storage solutions are concerned. Traditionally, wood sheds have been used as storage space for wood that you can make good use of during the winter months.

Wood sheds have evolved into many variants these days depending on individual requirements. Wood garden sheds are one of the variants that people have been building for use with their gardens. In addition, people have been building stylish and swanky wood garden sheds. These sheds are wonderful solutions for all the tools and implements that you use in your garden.

Planning your wood garden shed

Naturally, the first step to building a wood garden shed is the planning. There are a lot of issues that you need to take care of during this planning stage. These issues include:

  • The dimension of your wood garden shed. Obviously, the dimension will depend on the number of supplies and tools you want to store. Also, other determining factors would be what you want to store in the shed.
  • Your budget for the wood garden shed
  • Are you going to store flowers, seeds, and manure for the garden? If so, how will you make provisions for sunlight in your wood garden shed?
  • Are you going to make a locker or a cabinet for the tools and supplies so that these can be kept safe from children?
  • What will be the location of the wood garden shed?
  • Are you going to store anything else other than the garden tools and supplies?

Thinking about style

Typically, wood garden sheds are not large in size (assuming that you are not using it for storing other stuff from your house). Because of this, the cost is going to be relatively low.

Compartmentalize the wood garden shed

You may want to divide the entire wood garden shed into partitions so that you can store different tools required for gardening at different places. This not only makes it easy for you to find the tools whenever you need them, but also keeps them away from children who might injure themselves. You can also have different partitions for different tools and supplies such as saws, cutters, manure, seeds, and flowers.

As stated earlier, your wood garden shed could also serve as a multi-utility storage place. You could not only store tools and supplies, but also other countless other things as well. You could, depending on the dimension of the wood garden shed, allow your children to play inside or make it a place where you could relax and put your feet up after a hard day’s work.
