Shed Building Plans Q 1 – Do I Need a Building Permit?
Chances are you have already been browsing the internet for the perfect shed floor plans to suit your needs. While the internet has an over-abundance of sites offering free shed plans, believe me when I say not all shed plans are created equal. It’s unfortunate that a lot of the shed building plans out there lack detail. Sad that it’s not until after you’ve spent $99 for a shed plan do you realize it’s missing something.

For example, there is a common misconception that building permits are only required for larger than 10×10 shed building plans. So you’ve purchased simple plans, and then somehow realize a permit is required but your plans are not detailed enough to be approved by the code officials. Sometimes the building inspector will want to confirm that your shed will not sink in the ground, suffer a roof collapse or be subject to blowing over into your neighbor’s yard.

You may find out that an engineering stamp is required prior to construction but your plans are not detailed enough for the engineer to sign. Worst yet you’ve already completed your construction project only to be fined or directed to tear it down for any number of reasons. The bottom line is to make sure your shed building plans are detailed enough so that you can not only construct it properly, but also pass every possible inspection that may be required.

Shed Building Plans Q 2 – Do I Know the Best Location for My Shed
This question is very important for those with relatively large backyard so make sure you understand the topology of your yard when answering this question. First of all you want to steer clear of areas that are low-lying and collect water. Too much moisture can rot wood, ruin paint and allow mildew to collect on materials located inside.

Know your required property setbacks (you would have learned this in question 1). Typically you’ll find it to be a minimum of 10 – 15 ft from your property line.

Make sure your shed building plans are appropriate for yards that are slightly sloped. If your yard is on a slight slope, locate your shed with the front door on the high side, making it easier to step into.
A shady location may be tempting but locating your storage shed in direct sunlight will keep your shed dry and free of rot and mold.

Shed Building Plans Q 3 – What Are the Varying Climates My Shed Will Be Subjected To?
This question is almost never asked until you are in the middle of reconstructing your shed. Climate can play a key role in the kind of shed building plans you select. Snow fall during the winter can easily cause a shed with a flat roof to cave in. For this reason (plus head room) I always recommend a gable roof style shed. Simply remember to provide a 40 degree roof slope which should be enough to prevent snow from accumulating.

Shed Building Plans Q 3 – Where Is the Best Place to Purchase Storage Shed Plans?
There are a few decent online sources for shed building plans. My favorites are Better Barns, who also sell shed garage plans, but also check out: Summerwood Products and Today’s Plans. My top recommendation for purchasing high-quality shed building plans is MyShedPlans can click here to visit there official website.
